19th May is solemnly observed as Language Martyrs’ Day (Bhasha Shahid Diwas), particularly in the Barak Valley region of Assam. This day marks the supreme sacrifice of 11 brave individuals who lost their lives during the historic language movement — a mass protest that united people across all ages and walks of life. It stands as the first and only mass movement in the history of Barak Valley.

In a heartfelt tribute, President-elect Rtn. Debashish Som, along with fellow members of the Rotary Club of Silchar, paid their respects by laying a wreath at the Shaheed Smarak Smiriti in Gandhi Bagh during the commemorative ceremony.
