On March 4th, members of the Rotary Club of Silchar joined IAP Barak Valley Chapter for a walkathon in celebration of World Obesity Day, 2025. The Indian Academy of Pediatrics, one of the largest medical organizations globally, observed the day with a nationwide focus on practical solutions for achieving and maintaining a healthy weight. Even modest weight loss can help prevent or improve health problems linked to obesity. A healthy lifestyle, balanced diet, and regular exercise are key components. The IAP Barak Valley Chapter also held events in Cachar, Sribhumi, and Hailakandi.”
A mega walkathon took place at Silchar Medical College, with over 200 medicos, including MBBS, BDS, and BSc Nursing students, participating. Members of IAP Barak Valley Chapter, the Silchar Medical College Teachers Association, and the Rotary Club of Silchar joined in too. Our member Dr. D. J. Nath, Honorary Secretary of IAP Barak Valley Chapter, spoke on the importance of balanced diets, avoiding junk food, physical activity, and stress management for a longer, healthier life. After the walk, an awareness session was held, highlighting obesity’s complications. Dr. Burhan Uddin Choudhury also organized an awareness program in Sribhumi.

Members of IAP BARAK VALLEY CHAPTER, Silchar Medical College Teachers Association, Rotary Club of Silchar also participated in this WALKATHON.Dr Pinaki Chakraborty and Dr Nazrul Islam Barbhuiyan also spoke on various aspects of obesity.

Dr Ashish Shah, Dr Joydeep Roy, were also present in the event at Silchar Medical College. At the end of the walkathon, a brief awareness session was conducted in SMCH where Dr Nazrul Islam Barbhuiyan, Dr D J Nath and Dr Pinaki Chakraborty were the speakers. All the speakers stressed upon the importance of healthy lifestyle, balanced diet and regular physical activity. They also discussed in details the pathophysiology of Obesity and its complications. On this occasion, a School Health Check-up camp was conducted at KV NIT SILCHAR by members of IAP BARAK VALLEY CHAPTER. Dr Veeranna S C, Dr Ashish Shah and others from Silchar Medical College did Medical check up of school students with special emphasis on BMI, where 9 students were detected to be at risk of obesity.
